York Harbor Reading Room at Mason Hartley Reserve Maine Wedding

After photographing Megan and Hugh’s engagement session last year at Hartley Mason Reserve and Fisherman’s Walk to York Harbor Beach, I was very excited to return to such a beautiful location to photograph their wedding on August 10th, 2019. Megan got ready at Harbor Cliffs Inn (part of York Harbor Inn) while Hugh got ready nearby at his family’s residence. The couple had a lovely first look in Hugh’s grandmother’s garden, which was also a great location for their pre-ceremony wedding party and family portraits. Megan and Hugh’s wedding ceremony took place across the street at Hartley Mason Reserve, which is a public park overlooking York Harbor Beach with splendid ocean views. Their wedding reception took place at the York Harbor Reading Room, which is a gorgeous private event space next to the park. There was even a surprise firework show, put on by Megan’s uncle. It truly was a night to remember!

Here’s Megan and Hugh’s story they shared with their guests:

"The first time Hugh met Megan, he knew he'd met someone special. The second time, he knew that he'd met someone special, and Megan knew that Hugh was sort of faceblind.  It was June 2011 at the Green River Preserve summer camp, and Hugh had introduced himself to Megan twice within ten minutes.

Once Hugh and Megan were able to get a firm grip on what each other's faces looked like, they quickly fell in love, spending the summer in the kind of subterfuge necessary for camp romances. They coordinated their days off, planned their campout hikes to 'accidentally' cross paths, and pretended to know how to tie fly-fishing flies so they could teach an activity together. When the summer was over, they still couldn't tie flies, but they did keep dating through their time at UVA and UNC.  In 2014, Hugh and Megan moved to Virginia Beach, where they got their beloved cats, Domo and Luna.  Most recently, in July 2018, the whole family moved to Alexandria, Virginia.

Another storybook moment in Hugh and Megan's relationship was their engagement. Even Hugh remembers the exact moment they decided to get married - at a sushi restaurant in Virginia Beach right after the miso soup. Then almost immediately Hugh got a phone call informing him that his flight to Salt Lake City the following morning had been cancelled. If he wanted to go on his ski vacation at all, his travel companion Dillon told him, they would have to drive to Charlotte, NC in time for a 5am flight. "Well," Hugh said to Megan when he got off the phone, "I can't describe how excited I am to spend the rest of my life with you. But tonight I have to drive to Charlotte."

Two months later, they picked up the rings and drove immediately to First Landing State Park to get officially engaged. It was not a surprise; Megan doesn't like surprises. They had sandwiches, pimento cheese, champagne, and two rings, and they asked each other to marry....each other. They both said yes.

The moral of this fairy tale is that love at second sight might not get all the press, but it works just the same.”

I asked Megan to tell me more about her wedding style and overall vision:

How did you envision your wedding day? Tell us about your color palate, style and/or vision.

When we were in Maine last August I loved all the blue hydrangeas blooming, so that inspired the color scheme. I wanted the style to be classic and comfortable - something that would lend itself to guests feeling at home wandering the many interesting nooks of the reading room as well as compliment the ocean backdrop of the ceremony and reception.

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

The flowers were various white flowers with dusty blue hydrangeas and some greenery. They were arranged by Brenda's Bloomers who did an amazing job! I loved the bouquets and what she did with the fireplace at the reading room. My dress was Sottero and Midgley from Elegance by Roya in Alexandria, VA where we live. It was organza fabric with beaded straps, belt, and buttons down the back. I'd also like to shout out Megan VanDevanter and her team who did hair and make up for the women in the wedding. I think they did a great job! We didn't really do favors, although my mom put out flip flops for anyone whose feet got tired dancing in their dress shoes that were very popular. The cake was from Beach Pea Bakery in Kittery. There were tiers of lemon cake with Chambord whipped cream and raspberries with vanilla butter cream and tiers of chocolate cake with chocolate mousse, Chambord whipped cream, and vanilla butter cream.

Arla and Kevin’s Wedding at the Lucerne Inn in Dedham, Maine

I was so excited when Arla and Kevin hired me to photograph their August 2nd, 2019 wedding at The Lucerne Inn in Dedham, Maine. The inn is one of the most beautiful wedding venues in Maine, both inside and out. The property has stunning views of Bald Mountain and Phillips Lake, which provide a gorgeous outdoor backdrop for a wedding ceremony. The venue also has a brick patio attached to the Main Inn, where a pre-lit wedding tent was set up for the occasion.

After getting ready in separate rooms at the inn, the couple shared their first look outside. It was a heartfelt moment to witness their tears of happiness as they saw each other for the first time in their wedding day attire. Soon after, Arla and Kevin’s wedding ceremony began at The Overlook, which is the outdoor area of the inn with a gazebo and a lawn overlooking Dedham Maine’s Bald Mountain. It was truly the perfect setting for family and friends to gather and celebrate this special day.

Arla and Kevin share more about this wonderful day below:

How did you two meet?

In Arla’s words:

We met at The University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Kevin had a pet Fennec Fox, cutest little thing with huge ears. One of our mutual friends would always talk about this fox, so naturally, I HAD to meet Ardi. I got to meet Ardi and, more importantly, Kevin. One month later at a Christmas party (2013) we meet again, sparks fly, and we have been together ever since.

Tell us about the proposal.

In Kevin’s words:

After 3.5 years of dating Arla, I decided to take our relationship to the next level. First, I asked for the blessing of Arla’s parents, beginning with her mom, Amy, whom I felt enjoyed my company almost as much as Arla. She was immediately excited and gave me that honor. I then took my time (2 more months) to work up the courage to ask Arla’s dad, Karl, for his blessing, which he also immediately gave, with a small talk about what marriage means to him and what he hopes for his daughter. Fast forward 6 months, Arla’s mom and aunt Lori were shopping with us at the Volusia mall in Arla’s hometown of Daytona Beach, and I casually took Arla inside a jewelry store and pointed at some cool engagement rings and asked Arla which she liked. Her smiling face glowed as she caught the hint. So we looked around a bit and went to Arla’s family jewelers. She gave me some good pointers on which styles she liked and we got her ring size.

Months passed as I worked to afford a ring and diamond. Suddenly, Amy asked if I would be willing to use Arla’s grandmother’s diamond for the engagement ring. I knew this would mean the world to Arla since her Nana passed away just a few months after we began dating over 4 years ago. We decided to add the stone to the ring that I hoped Arla would love.

The plan for the proposal itself was to have Arla’s family up in Maine, which is her favorite place in the world and where we ended up getting married. However, Amy had a recent back surgery with complications and was not able to make the flight, but she promised me that it would still be just as special, and she was not wrong. Aunt Lori and her husband Uncle Brett happened to be celebrating their wedding anniversary that summer and invited us to dinner. So, we dressed nicely and took photos on the dock before dinner. At this point, I sneakily put the box in my back pocket, began saying a few words during pictures (Uncle Brett was taking a video), and told her how much I loved her. Initially, she was wondering why the heck I was talking while we were taking pictures, and then said “what are you doing? What’s going on?” as I fell onto one knee and opened the box asking Arla to marry me and spend the rest of her life with me. Her hands went to her face and the tears of joy began pouring. She of course said “Yes!” and I put the ring on. She was so nervous she initially extended her right hand, but we got it straightened out in the end. Within minutes, we went back in the house, popped the champagne, and called our families. We then got to celebrate by going out to a fancy dinner to cap off the perfect evening.

How did you envision your wedding day? Tell us about your color palate, style and/or vision.

We wanted our wedding day style to be classy, elegant, and timeless. Our color palette was ivory and blush with gold accents. The groomsmen wore navy tuxes and bridesmaids in deep berry.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

Our favorite moment of our wedding day was the first dance. We took dance lessons but we didn’t tell anyone. It was fun to have a secret with which we could surprise our friends and families.  We were nervous before the dance started but once the music started, we focused on each other and all the nerves faded away.

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

In Arla’s words:

My flowers were a mixture of roses, garden roses and hydrangeas in shades of white, cream, and blush. The bridesmaid bouquets, boutonnières, and corsages were made with the same flowers.  My dress was a strapless slim A-line gown with a long train. It was ivory with lace and glass beaded embellishments.  My veil was cathedral length and made of all tulle. The bridesmaids wore all different dresses in the same deep berry color, they all looked gorgeous and were able to express their own style. The groom and groomsmen wore navy tuxes with a deep berry pocket square to match the bridesmaids. The groomsmen also wore crazy socks. Anyone who knows Kevin knows how much he loves crazy socks so I had to include that on our wedding day. Our wedding cake was 3 tiered, covered in bright white frosting with blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries cascading down the side. It was just as delicious as it was gorgeous.  The wedding favors were mini jars of blueberry jam. They also doubled as seating assignments; each jar had a tag with the guest’s name, table number, and our hashtags. Our centerpieces varied, some with gold lanterns and some with gold geometric vases. All of the centerpieces had pillar candles in tall glass vases and gold votives surrounded by eucalyptus branches with loose blush and ivory flowers.

The Hitching Post Dayton Maine Scottish-American Wedding | Angela and Billy

Angela and Billy were married at The Hitching Post in Dayton, Maine on July 20th, 2019. Despite the record-breaking high temperatures that day, everyone gathered to celebrate this adorable couple. My favorite part was seeing how they incorporated the groom’s Scottish heritage into the wedding —many of the men in the wedding party wore traditional Scottish attire and they even had a bagpiper play during their ceremony!

The Hitching Post was the perfect wedding venue for the occasion. The property has a large rustic barn on a beautiful property with a path leading up a hill to a lovely ceremony space. Along the path, there are colorful flowers and other planted greenery that add a great touch to the location. There is even an antique trailer truck in the nearby field, which we definitely had to get photos with!

I asked Angela to tell me a little more about her special day:

How did you two meet?

We played co-ed soccer together

How did you envision your wedding day? Tell us about your color palate, style and/or vision.

We envisioned a day with only our closest family and friends, relaxed, fun and with great music and food. Billy is from Scotland and I grew up on a farm in Vermont so we wanted to incorporate the things from both places that mattered to us. Growing up on a farm the barn venue was a must for me. We incorporated a few things that are important in Scotland as well like the Scottish blessing before dinner, the hip flasks full of whisky in the sporrans, the groomsmen in kilts and bonnie prince charlie jackets and the bagpiper. The color palate was steel blue and off white. Billy's family tartan has hues of blue, green and red so the blue from the girls dresses matched perfectly with the colors in Billy's kilt. It is also traditional in Scotland for women to wear hats and/or fascinators to weddings so the bridesmaids (as well as a lot of the guests) all wore fascinators.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

When I was walking up the stone path, I came around the corner and looked up. When our eyes met, he was already fighting back tears and I started crying as well. Later my sister-in-law told me that when he saw me, he made an audible gasp before trying to choke back the tears.

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

Our flowers were simple; the bouquets were daisies (my favorite flower), Scottish thistle (the flower of Scotland, where Billy is from) and baby's breath. We had 3 cakes as there were so many delicious options we didn't want to have just one flavor (lemon cake with a blueberry filling, pink champagne cake with strawberry filling and a blueberry cake with a lemon frosting). We didn't do wedding favors, people rarely bring them home with them and if they do they toss them out. My dress was by Maggie Sottero, it was simple and elegant with a little lace detail around the bust line, it had a moderate train with brilliant lace detail. Due to the weather predicted to be very hot the day of our wedding I went out a few days before the wedding to get a comfortable semi-formal sundress to wear after our first dance and boy was I glad I did! The weather for our wedding was 95 degrees and sunny!

My brother performed our ceremony which made it extra special and very personal and later gave the most amazing speech.

DJ Jodi, was absolutely amazing at what she does, Billy and I didn't leave the dance floor all night!

Our caterer Fire & Co made sure that the food came out hot and that there was plenty of it (we had it served family style so people could eat what they wanted and however much they wanted). The guests are still commenting on how amazing the food and appetizers were! When deciding on a caterer I had decided that I did not want lukewarm food that looked unappetizing and that guests didn't get served a plate of food they didn't want. Our caterer did not let me down! The food was amazing and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is passionate about food and what they serve their guests!

The best part by far for us was to have so many of our family and friends from all over join us! We had family travel from Scotland, Texas, Vermont and of course Maine!

Breanna and Matt’s Portland Maine Wedding at The Portland Club

I’m so excited to share Breanna and Matt’s wedding from June 29th, 2019 at The Portland Club in Portland, Maine. The couple got ready at The Westin Portland Harborview Hotel, where they also had their first look and some of their pre-ceremony portraits. From there, we walked over to The Portland Club, where The Black Tie Company coordinated a lovely indoor wedding ceremony and catered reception.

I asked Breanna to tell us more about her special day:

How did you two meet?

Matt and I met at work in Pittsburgh in 2013. I lived there my whole life, but Matt moved from Maine to Pennsylvania for work. After we finished training together, I kept taking a lot of work calls for him, which led to us talking and getting to know each other. After a casual work friendship for a few months, we went on our first date to a Mediterranean restaurant. After a few months of dating, he was moved to another department and since then we’ve been partners.  We started planning our wedding in April of 2018 and moved to Maine in November, 2018.

When and where did you get engaged? Tell us about the proposal.

Since 2014, we have always spent Christmas with Matt’s family in Maine. He and his mom went Christmas shopping in 2017 and when they returned home Matt was acting strange. He said we would wrap gifts downstairs together in a few moments, but I had to wait for his okay. When I came downstairs he asked me to hand him a gift for his dad. When I opened it I saw the ring. I always wanted a nontraditional engagement ring. He said he saw this one at a store and loved it. When the sales woman said it was Tanzanite (his birth stone) he thought it was a sign to stop waiting and take the next step for us. We talked privately downstairs for a while and then celebrated with his family. It was romantic and spontaneous.

How did you envision your wedding day? Tell us about your color palate, style and/or vision.

I have a lot of love for astrology and constellations. I felt like Matt and I were “written in the stars” so we chose a starry night theme. The bridesmaids wore shades of stormy weather (blue, gray, and purple) and starry clips in their hair. The tables were named after constellations. The invitations had a lovely moon graphic on them and we chose songs that were “moon” themed (fly me to the moon, dancing in the moonlight). I chose a simple white gold wedding band with starry sapphires. Finally, my mom found me a starry white and blue hair vine that I wore like a celestial tiara. We had the wedding inside the historic Portland Club, so the atmosphere was elegant and airy. I wanted just a hint of magic in our space and I think we achieved it.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

My favorite moment of the wedding day was Matt’s and my first look. The morning was wonderful getting ready with my mom and bridesmaids. The weather was getting hotter than expected and there was some tension surrounding the first look. We moved it inside the hotel at the last moment and as soon as Matt and I saw each other the tension melted away. I think we were both more nervous than expected and it felt so good to see the one I love!

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

Some of the best wedding advice I received early on was from a tarot card reader who asked me what things mattered to me. She suggested I outsource everything else. My gown was what was most important to me and I was able to buy it off the rack from Luna Sewickeley Bridal Boutique. I fell in love with the silhouette, the long sleeves, the eyelash lace, the scalloped open neck, and the incredible train. I found my beautiful lace shoes on Amazon for $30 and wore my great grandmother’s earrings to complete the look. My flowers were ordered in bulk from Sam’s Club and my incredibly talented Stepsister and Stepmom from Pennsylvania arranged the bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages. My cake and all of our food was handled by the Black Tie Company which made the most amazing white and blueberry cupcakes. Our favors were an old Pittsburgh tradition of a Cookie Table. In the depression era, cakes were a luxury and Pittsburghers adapted by having family and friends bake homemade cookies for the weddings. My favorite part is seeing the variety of cookies. No one in Maine had heard of a cookie table, but my mother in law got so many Maine people to participate. My Pittsburgh family was delighted by the nontraditional items from Maine like cornflake cookies! All of our stationary from the invitations, table numbers, custom seating chart, programs, and cookie table sign were designed by my talented bridesmaid Emily Nowels. Finally, we wanted just a little bit of decoration around the ceremony space and my incredible mother put together some branches and fairy lights, not to mention the lanterns and floral wreathes for the tables.

My day felt incredibly special because I shared my starry stormy vision with my friends and family. They took the vision and made it a reality, which kept me sane in the process. Family is very important to Matt and I, so we were grateful for the communal effort and feel it gave our wedding. We also had a space by the bar where we displayed our family’s wedding pictures from parents, to grandparents, and great-grandparents.

The 1812 Farm Bristol Maine Wedding | Lindsey and Arthur

I enjoyed reading Lindsey and Arthur’s love story on their wedding website so much that I decided to share their story here:

Arthur and Lindsey met while they were both working at Cabbage Island Clambakes. Both of them contemplated their choice to go to work on the Island that year, yet they did.

Before long Arthur caught Lindsey's eye with his put together look, charming smile, and wonderful personality. Lindsey asked Samantha to put in a good word with Arthur and suggest to him that he ask Lindsey out.

Later that week Arthur texted Lindsey and asked her out to dinner. Lindsey accepted. The next week Arthur swept Lindsey off to Camden, Maine, to a wonderful dinner at the Waterfront restaurant, not knowing Lindsey is not a fan of Seafood.

The second date, Lindsey set up a movie night on her grandparents dock. At the end of the date Arthur and Lindsey shared their first kiss. Since that date Arthur and Lindsey became inseparable, spending every night together. Arthur asked Lindsey to be his girlfriend. After a few months of dating Arthur said to Lindsey, "I think that I love you." To which Lindsey responded, "do you think or do you know?"

In the years to follow Arthur and Lindsey shared many adventures. Arthur shipping off to Washington, moving in together in January of 2017, Arthur getting his 3rd AE license, adopting their dog child, Dutch, and their adorable cat, Socks.

On February 21, 2018, Arthur popped the question to Lindsey. She had been at work all day. When she got home, Arthur picked her up from the Ferry and suggested that they go for a ride (not uncommon) and drove her to Town Beach. It was freezing but Arthur suggested that they take a walk so he gave Lindsey his coat and they took off onto the beach. The night was like a fairy tale. The sky was a pastel pink and purple. Arthur had picked a small patch of sand within the rocky beach. After staring out at the coast line for a minute he got down on one knee and asked Lindsey to marry him. Her response was to cry and scream “Oh my goodness, you’re serious” and then finally answer, “yes”.
