Angela and Billy were married at The Hitching Post in Dayton, Maine on July 20th, 2019. Despite the record-breaking high temperatures that day, everyone gathered to celebrate this adorable couple. My favorite part was seeing how they incorporated the groom’s Scottish heritage into the wedding —many of the men in the wedding party wore traditional Scottish attire and they even had a bagpiper play during their ceremony!

The Hitching Post was the perfect wedding venue for the occasion. The property has a large rustic barn on a beautiful property with a path leading up a hill to a lovely ceremony space. Along the path, there are colorful flowers and other planted greenery that add a great touch to the location. There is even an antique trailer truck in the nearby field, which we definitely had to get photos with!

I asked Angela to tell me a little more about her special day:

How did you two meet?

We played co-ed soccer together

How did you envision your wedding day? Tell us about your color palate, style and/or vision.

We envisioned a day with only our closest family and friends, relaxed, fun and with great music and food. Billy is from Scotland and I grew up on a farm in Vermont so we wanted to incorporate the things from both places that mattered to us. Growing up on a farm the barn venue was a must for me. We incorporated a few things that are important in Scotland as well like the Scottish blessing before dinner, the hip flasks full of whisky in the sporrans, the groomsmen in kilts and bonnie prince charlie jackets and the bagpiper. The color palate was steel blue and off white. Billy's family tartan has hues of blue, green and red so the blue from the girls dresses matched perfectly with the colors in Billy's kilt. It is also traditional in Scotland for women to wear hats and/or fascinators to weddings so the bridesmaids (as well as a lot of the guests) all wore fascinators.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

When I was walking up the stone path, I came around the corner and looked up. When our eyes met, he was already fighting back tears and I started crying as well. Later my sister-in-law told me that when he saw me, he made an audible gasp before trying to choke back the tears.

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

Our flowers were simple; the bouquets were daisies (my favorite flower), Scottish thistle (the flower of Scotland, where Billy is from) and baby's breath. We had 3 cakes as there were so many delicious options we didn't want to have just one flavor (lemon cake with a blueberry filling, pink champagne cake with strawberry filling and a blueberry cake with a lemon frosting). We didn't do wedding favors, people rarely bring them home with them and if they do they toss them out. My dress was by Maggie Sottero, it was simple and elegant with a little lace detail around the bust line, it had a moderate train with brilliant lace detail. Due to the weather predicted to be very hot the day of our wedding I went out a few days before the wedding to get a comfortable semi-formal sundress to wear after our first dance and boy was I glad I did! The weather for our wedding was 95 degrees and sunny!

My brother performed our ceremony which made it extra special and very personal and later gave the most amazing speech.

DJ Jodi, was absolutely amazing at what she does, Billy and I didn't leave the dance floor all night!

Our caterer Fire & Co made sure that the food came out hot and that there was plenty of it (we had it served family style so people could eat what they wanted and however much they wanted). The guests are still commenting on how amazing the food and appetizers were! When deciding on a caterer I had decided that I did not want lukewarm food that looked unappetizing and that guests didn't get served a plate of food they didn't want. Our caterer did not let me down! The food was amazing and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is passionate about food and what they serve their guests!

The best part by far for us was to have so many of our family and friends from all over join us! We had family travel from Scotland, Texas, Vermont and of course Maine!
