Elegant English Garden Inspired Canton Maine Wedding | Caroline & Ian

I met Caroline and Ian in October of 2021 when I captured their engagement session in Cape Elizabeth. Our session was so much fun and I knew that they’d be a joy to work with —and they were!

On the couple’s special day, September 10th, Caroline got ready at her parents’ Maine lake house in Canton, where the ceremony would also take place. Ian got ready just a couple houses down the street. The couple shared a first look outside the lake house and then they were joined by family and friends for lots of portraits. I really liked that we took all of their formal portraits before the ceremony. It allowed them to spend more time with their family and friends and enjoy cocktail hour.

The ceremony was outside facing the lake. It was a beautiful view! Right after the ceremony ended, I took a group photo of everyone from the balcony of the lake house. After that, everyone took a shuttle to the reception, which was located in a large field also in Canton, Maine. I was amazed at how beautiful the reception tent and décor looked at sunset with the view of the mountains. It couldn’t have been more perfect. As the sunset got even more stunning, I took lots of portraits of Caroline and Ian. It was truly a photographer’s dream being in that location with that lighting!

The reception included toasts and speeches, dinner, the first dance, parent dances, and cake cutting. After that, everyone danced the night away! During the last song, Caroline and Ian’s family and friends surrounded them on the dance floor with fairy light ribbon wands. Then, they lined the path outside as the couple made their exit. It was truly an unforgettable evening and I’m so honored to have been part of their wonderful day!

Here’s my Q&A with the couple:

How did you two meet?

We met at a work event. We both worked remotely so work events were very rare, but we happened to sit at the same table and we hit it off. Coincidentally, we were both going to the same game night that evening and didn’t realize. The rest is history!

When and where did you get engaged? Tell us about the proposal.

We got engaged in July 2021 in Iceland. We hiked up a hill overlooking a horseshoe shaped canyon. Ian asked the only other people nearby to take our picture and whispered (much louder than he realized) “I’m about to propose, just go with it.” Little did he know that Caroline heard the whole thing and had about a 30 second heads up!

How did you envision your wedding day? Tell us about your color palate, style and/or vision.

We decided we wanted to utilize a lot of the beautiful surrounding scenery, especially the lake, so we wanted to highlight that rather than take away. The closest style or theme we had was “English Garden”, but we didn’t want to lean too heavily into that. Our colors were blush and white with lots of greenery. But the most important part of our vision was to make sure everyone had a blast!

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

It’s impossible to pick just one! But one of our favorite unique moments was when the DJ’s generator lost power. Instead of waiting awkwardly for the music to come back on, everyone on the dance floor sang the entire song “All Star” by Smash Mouth. It was pretty impressive that everyone knew all the words! The generator came back on just around the time we finished the song so it worked out perfectly!

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

For our flowers we wanted two things specifically, English roses as a nod to our love of England and the fact that Ian spent a decade there, and olive leaves as a nod to Caroline’s Lebanese side of the family who hail from a big olive producing town.

The gown took some finding. I tried on around 40 dresses before I found the right one. I knew going in I wanted fabric that was either similar to or actual satin with some sort of lace. That was surprisingly difficult to find!

Our favors were blueberry jam and blackberry jemmy (something between jam and jelly) made by Bruce Thompson, who is affectionately referred to as “The Barefoot Peddler”. He drives through Canton selling his incredible homemade jams/jellies, baked goods, and fresh produce, often times without shoes. We have been obsessed with his jams and jellies in particular and wanted to share it with our friends and families.

For our cake we had four layers, the flavors we chose were strawberry cheesecake, chocolate with raspberry jam, carrot cake, and blueberry vanilla. We did quite a few taste tests to figure out our favorite flavors and enjoyed the whole process! We also put a little Rico (our dog) on the back side of the cake digging into it!

The Red Barn at Outlook Farm South Berwick Maine Wedding | Stacey & Michael

I first met Stacey and Michael late August of 2018 when I photographed their engagement session. These two were so much fun to work with and I was so excited that they chose me to photograph their wedding on October 19th, 2019.

Stacey and Michael both got ready for their wedding at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel. They met up nearby at Prescott Park for their first look in the garden. After that, the couple took a trolley over to their venue with their family and wedding party.

The Red Barn at Outlook Farm in South Berwick, Maine was the perfect place for an elegant rustic fall wedding. The property offers a lot of variety! We took most of the formal portraits before the ceremony using different locations onsite. Stacey and Michael exchanged vows in front of the large iconic tree that sits in front of the red barn at the venue. It was a beautiful fall wedding ceremony!

We walked the property again during cocktail hour and took more portraits in front of the venue, in the gazebo and near the golf course. Sunset was happening at this time so we had amazing lighting for the bride and groom portraits. After that, Stacey and Michael were announced into their wedding reception, where they shared their first dance, followed by toasts, dinner and lots of dancing! They cut their wedding cake and celebrated into the night with their family and friends.

Here’s my Q&A with Stacey and Michael:

How did you two meet?

Despite growing up in the same town and attending the same High School, we met after college through mutual friends and discovered we had a shared love of tennis. After several "tennis dates" our friendship and affection grew.

When and where did you get engaged? Tell us about the proposal.

On a winter evening, Stacey and I were out celebrating our "date-iversary" in Boston. We had dinner on Beacon Hill and were strolling through the Boston Public Gardens to our usual after-dinner drinks and dessert spot when we paused on the bridge. After a short time of watching people gingerly shuffle out onto the ice and take photos, I dropped to one knee and asked her to marry me. Her reaction was positive, but I'm not sure I actually heard a "yes" until I asked a second time.

How did you envision your wedding day? Tell us about your color palette, style and/or vision.

We knew we wanted to get married in the fall, a time in New England that we find to be our favorite. We both enjoy time in nature and knew we wanted to have our ceremony take place outside. Sticking with the fall theme, we wanted to get some rich fall colors but also incorporate our own style with the bridesmaids' dresses' color and try to tie it all together with repeating these colors and variations of them throughout our decor.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

That is a tricky question. One moment that stuck out to us was the wedding party introductions. It gave a brief point in time to catch our breath with each other before our first dance as a husband and wife, but was also an incredibly fun and exciting moment that kicked off the evening of music and dancing. Another moment that we particularly enjoyed was the sunset photos taken with just the two of us. It was a nice opportunity to have some alone time, digest the ceremony and prepare ourselves for the whirlwind of the reception.

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

Our flowers were done by Lyndsey Loring Design. As long as I've known my mother she's had a love and appreciation for flowers, and for her it was the most important thing to get right for our wedding day. We were amazed by what Lyndsey was able to do for us. The bouquets were a beautiful mix of dark burgundy, pale orange, and ivory flowers, some cascading eucalyptus, and a mix of white and red berries for a fall touch. With Lyndsey's guidance we chose eucalyptus as our primary greenery in centerpieces and bouquets, as it blended nicely with the bridesmaid dress color. A garland of eucalyptus, brightly colored flowers and berries accented the mantles inside our reception space, and we had deep red mums on another mantle we used to commemorate loved ones who are no longer with us. The men wore less traditional ivory calla lily boutonnieres.

I really had fun trying on as many different wedding dress styles as I possibly could. After all, I won't have the opportunity again to shop for a wedding gown for myself (that's the goal anyways!). After countless stores, dresses, and late nights comparing photos, I finally narrowed down my choices and returned to a store to try on one particular gown. Upon trying on the dress I had gone back for, I was somewhat dismayed as I realized it was NOT the one.

However, the sales woman brought over another dress I had tried on weeks before and asked to be set aside, which I had since forgotten. After exploring so many options, the moment I tried on this gown, I knew it was perfect. It was classic, flattering and elegant. It also came with a detachable train which was a stunning addition, and I cannot wait to see all of the photos! I bought my dress from Modern Bride in Bedford, NH and highly recommend them! All of the staff were wonderful to work with and all of the tailoring was done there. Plus...no sales tax!

For Mike and I, picking (and tasting) dessert was the piece of wedding planning we were most looking forward to. There are so many delicious dessert options out there and we didn't want to settle on having only cake, so we opted to go with a dessert bar. There were pumpkin whoopie pies with cream cheese frosting, mini cheesecake bites, mini cupcakes in two flavors, pecan tassies and oatmeal/white chocolate/cranberry cookies, with autumn apple cider donut favors. We had a small, ceremonial carrot cake with cream cheese filling/frosting, decorated like a birch tree with some flower accents. Everything was beyond our expectations and we absolutely will be going back for more in the future! All desserts were provided by My Friends Bakery. Lara did such a great job with everything!

Alayna and Shawn’s Falmouth Country Club Maine Wedding

After meeting Alayna and Shawn last year and photographing their engagement session, I was very excited to photograph their wedding at the Falmouth Country Club in Falmouth, Maine. Alayna and Shawn’s is the third wedding I’ve photographed at this gorgeous country club golf resort. In 2016, I photographed Mackenzie and Stewart’s wedding and in 2018 I photographed Ashton and John’s wedding there. The Falmouth Country Club is definitely one of my favorite wedding venues to photograph in Maine. Though we were lucky enough not to have a hurricane forecasted to pass through as predicted the weekend prior, rain was still in the forecast on September 14th, 2019. Once again, luck was on our side when the rain stopped prior to the ceremony and held off throughout the rest of the day!

The ceremony took place outside on the golf course, with beautiful décor mixed with floral arrangements by Katey of Campbell’s Floral Design. The wedding reception took place inside the tent that is on the property of the country club. I loved the color palate Alayna and Shawn chose for their special day. The deep reds, navy, blush pink and ivory hues perfectly complimented the elegance of the chandelier lit tent. The day went along so smoothly that the guests had plenty of time to enjoy dinner and dancing. It truly couldn’t have been more perfect of a day to celebrate the marriage of Alayna and Shawn.

I asked Alayna to tell more about how her special day came together:

How did you two meet?

We met at UMaine through my cousin Kelly. Kelly and I are very close, so when she started dating one of his roommates we naturally began to spend a lot of time at the guys’ apartment. It was "love at first sight." I can still remember what he was wearing the first time I saw him!

When and where did you get engaged?

The proposal happened at home in our living room. Quick, but sweet. It was an absolute surprise to me. I had actually initiated a conversation about marriage the night before completely unaware that he had already bought a ring and had intended to propose!

How did you envision your wedding day?

We envisioned a day that embodied elegance and simplicity. In my head I pictured an early fall/late summer wedding with crystal chandeliers, greenery, and pops of burgundy. Falmouth Country Club provided us with a beautiful, clean cut landscape to conduct our ceremony and also a spacious, white tent (complete with chandeliers and draping) to host our guests at our reception. I wanted my planning to be as stress free as possible so the fact that we did not need to utilize third party vendors for rentals was an added bonus. Our color palette was burgundy and navy blue. Whites and blushes were also incorporated into the flowers to bring out the subtle blush tones in my wedding dress.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

The dance party! We love to dance, as do most of our family and friends so getting everyone together to let loose and have a good time was particularly special to us. When the night was over we really felt like we celebrated to the fullest, making it a night that we will never forget.

Jess and Dan’s Boothbay Harbor Maine Wedding

Hurricane Dorian was expected to pass by Maine on September 7th, 2019, the day of Jess and Dan’s wedding. Needless to say, everyone was a little nervous about the weather putting a damper on the day. Jess got ready at Boothbay Harbor Oceanside Golf Resort while Dan got ready at his family’s cottage on Capitol Island, off of Southport, Maine. The couple did their first look out on the docks of Capitol Island, where the day began cloudy and windy but quickly turned warm and sunny. It was pretty remarkable! After roaming the island taking photos together, Jess and Dan traveled over to Barrett Park for their wedding ceremony. They had even rented an antique car for their transportation! After the ceremony, we took more photos at Barrett Park before heading off to Boothbay Railway Village for the wedding reception. The wedding party was announced into the wedding reception and Jess and Dan shared their first dance. They had a lovely buffet dinner followed by three great speeches by members of the wedding party. After the parent dances, the floor was open for family and friends to join in on the dancing. Everyone was having a wonderful day celebrating with Jess and Dan. Finally, the couple had everyone light sparklers as they cut their wedding cake —an interesting twist from the traditional cake cutting and sparkler exit. All in all, Jess and Dan’s wedding ended up being a perfect day filled with love and laughter.

Here’s my Q&A with Jess:

How did you two meet?

We went to high school together but didn’t officially meet until college at UMaine. We met at Dan’s fraternity house, Phi Kap. He sat next to me and we talked the night away.

When and where did you get engaged? Tell us about the proposal.

We got engaged on top of Mt. Agamenticus. Dan has been ridiculed on a constant basis by friends and family (on both sides) for a few years of when he was going to finally propose to me. He asked if I would like to go to the botanical gardens in Boothbay or hike Mt. Agamenticus in York a few weeks in advance so we could have a getaway. I still was surprised because he was looking to propose!

We got to the top of the mountain, while it was sprinkling none-stop, and explored the view. Dan took his backpack off and knelt down in the mud. I then yelled at him to get his knee out of the mud (mind you I had no idea of his plans) and he then pulled out a Cliff bar and gave it to me. I was very happy with the Cliff bar and walked away with it (hunger hit and Dan knows how to deal with me when I’m hungry). He promptly asked if I could come back and pulled out the ring.

How did you envision your wedding day? Tell us about your color palate, style and/or vision.

We envisioned our wedding day exactly how it played out. Minus the rain or Hurricane Dorian trying to crash our weekend. We wanted it to be by the ocean and in a place that meant something to us. Dan grew up in Southport on Capitol Island in the summers and his family spent a lot of time in Boothbay. Knowing how gorgeous Boothbay is to us and how much our loved ones would enjoy their time there, we decided that was the perfect location. Our Sister in Law and my Mother in Law came up with the idea of Barrett Park because of the bay, and the Boothbay Railway Museum because of the location and we are both history buffs.

We had a mixture of color pallets and themes as we had a lot we wanted to incorporate. The main colors were purple, blush and navy, however, we needed to also include our family’s tartans. The Lewis, McNiel and Mackenzie tartans were included for immediate family members to honor our Scottish heritage. My Jewish heritage was also honored by our ceremony. The Nautical theme was because we were in Boothbay, but also because we love being on the water.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

Our first look was our favorite moment of the entire day. We didn’t have 150 people around us and it was the only moment we had for ourselves which allowed us to breathe and take the day in.

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

The absolutely gorgeous flowers were done by Lee’s Floral and Garden. Lee is a good friend of ours and our bridesmaid Amanda’s Mom. I told her our color pallet and that we needed to include the tartans on my bouquet. She asked me what kind of flowers, and I told her I just like pretty things and she created everything!

My gown was from Andrea’s Bridal in Portland. I am not a huge shopper and I get overwhelmed with all of the choices. I wanted it to be a one stop shop. My dress was the third one I tried on, and I tried a total of five dresses. I knew it was the one I chose because I felt like a princess. I have always strived to be Belle from Beauty and the Beast and I felt like her in my dress! We knew that was the one when I tried it on.

Our cake was from the awesome creation of Renee and Jesse Landry of Landry Confections in Topsham. We told them our vision of our day and they created a red velvet cake with chocolate ganache, cream cheese frosting on the inside and buttercream frosting on the outside. Our cupcakes were absolutely amazing as well. They did such a good job blending our tastes.

Jennifer and Michael’s Biddeford Pool Maine Wedding

September 29th, 2018 was an extraordinary day that was 7 years on the making. Jennifer describes her journey with Michael and how they fell in love:

In August 2011 I was entering my first year of college at UMaine in Orono. I decided to join the UMaine marching band and it was our very first marching band rehearsal that I met Mike. He was entering his junior year of college. I didn't know anyone in the marching band would always be alone when we walked around campus to get to our next rehearsal. Mike noticed this and started walking with me. We started to get to know each other during these long walks across campus. On September 5th Mike asked me if I wanted to go for a nature walk in Bangor and I agreed. We couldn't find the entrance to this nature trail and ended up walking through the woods. We walked for miles and had no idea where we were. Luckily we found a lady who was doing some work or her field and asked her where the trail was. She pointed us in the right direction and we eventually found the trail. When we headed back we realized we just needed to park about a couple hundred feet ahead to the trail head. When we got back to campus Mike asked me if I had fun. I said yes. He asked me if I wanted to do more stuff like this. I said yes. He said do you want to go out? And you guessed it, I said yes.

A couple years later Mike and I hiked Mount Washington for the first time with some of my family. We both loved it so much that we wanted to continue hiking, but not just in the White Mountains. Mount Washington is the tallest mountain in New Hampshire, Mike said to me one night if I wanted to hike all the state's highest points. I said yes.

After I graduated college in 2016 we set off for a 3 week vacation out west to hike some of the mountains out there. I was most excited for Colorado. Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest peak is over 14,000 feet tall and is still to this day the tallest mountain we've ever hiked. Mike and I were slow to hike it but we made it and as we sat on the top of the mountain huffing and puffing, trying to catch our breath Mike ask me if I remembered how he asked me out. I said yes. He said do you want to do more stuff like this. I said yes. He said do you want to marry me? You guessed it, I said yes. He had carried the ring to the top of the mountain and put it on my finger.

For our honeymoon we are heading out to Hawaii to Hike Hawaii's tallest mountain, Mauna Kea.

All ll I knew I wanted for the wedding is that I wanted it to be in September and I wanted it to be Fall. September 29th was the perfect day. I also knew our colors had to be burgundy and navy blue because they look so well together just like Mike and I look so well together.

Our party favors were coasters made from pieces of cedar wood that my father cut down from my home in Maine.  We bought a branding iron that had our names and the date of our wedding and a nice flowery design.  We burned the brand in to the wood pieces and put many coats of polyurethane on them to make them shine and put a piece of felt on the back side.
